This is the infamous prison – where you can even go inside cells and experience the cold and stark surroundings firsthand. Alcatraz served as a federal penitentiary from 1933 to 1963, where notorious criminals like Al Capone, Machine Gun Kelly, and Creepy Karpis were held. The award-winning 45-minute cell house audio headset tour will captivate you with escape attempts, riots, bizarre characters, and much more. Displays include prison life, guard controls, and how three men made their famous “Escape From Alcatraz.”
Alcatraz remains extremely popular.
The Red and White Fleet Bay Cruise offers one fabulous view after another.
You’ll sail past the city skyline, including views of downtown, Fort Mason, the Marina district, Fort Point, and Presidio National Park. You’ll take in the imposing Golden Gate Bridge from below and creep up along the back of Alcatraz Island. Background views of Sausalito, Tiburon, and Angel Island add to the appeal.
With the optional audio headset, you can learn about this city’s rich cultural history as you cruise past some of the area’s most famous landmarks.

INDOOR DECKS CLOSED DUE TO COVID-19 AS OF MAY 2021.
Be sure to dress warmly for the outside decks. Depending on the forecast, consider hats, jackets, layers, and even gloves. San Francisco is known to have cool evening weather and being out on the water will only magnify things. But it’s more fun to be soaking up the views and the great atmosphere than it is to worry about being underdressed.
Upon purchase, you will receive an email Voucher showing your purchase. The Voucher will need to be presented on your phone at the Red & White ticket window at Pier 43&½.
Until further notice, you have to get a short-term reservation. This is usually for the next boat, but due to COVID-19 restrictions, they are limiting departure capacity. This means that you may have to wait for a second departure (which may not be available at the very end of the day).
Tours are free for kids under age 5.
