Alcatraz City Cruises

Please arrive 30 minutes early at Pier 33, Alcatraz Landing. To pick up tickets, all guests over age 18 are required to provide a government-issued photo ID.

The boat ride from Pier 33 takes 20-25 minutes to get to Alcatraz. The ferry circles the island, getting you close to spots not seen on the day tour.

This is the infamous prison – where you can go inside cells and experience the cold and stark surroundings firsthand. Alcatraz served as a federal penitentiary from 1933 to 1963, where notorious criminals like Al Capone and Machine Gun Kelly were held.

Once you dock, a docent will lead you up the hill to the cell house. Stops will be made on the way at Civil War era buildings and other historic sites. This docent tour is unique to the Night Tour.

The award-winning 45-minute cell house audio headset tour will captivate you with escape attempts, riots, bizarre characters, and much more. Displays include prison life, guard controls, solitary confinement, and how three men made their famous “Escape From Alcatraz.”

The Alcatraz Night Tour is very popular and we are only able to obtain a limited number of tickets. We sell out of this tour quickly.

  • Limited to just a few hundred visitors per night - far less crowded than the Day Tour
  • Special Park Programs available during the evening Video History Presentation – no charge
  • Audio Tour includes sound effects, interviews with prisoners and guards, and historic details
  • Bookstore with information in many languages
  • Visit the prison recreation yard and/or discover the island’s unique gardens
  • Unlimited photo opportunities and great views looking back at the San Francisco skyline or out to the Golden Gate Bridge
  • Expect cool weather. You will experience the real feel of Alcatraz!
  • Look for other history or contemporary exhibits.

The Blue & Gold Fleet Bay Cruise offers one fabulous view after another.

You’ll sail past the city skyline, including views of downtown, Fort Mason, the Marina district, Fort Point, and Presidio National Park. You’ll take in the imposing Golden Gate Bridge from below and creep up along the back of Alcatraz Island. Background views of the Marin Headlands, Sausalito, Tiburon, and Angel Island all add to the appeal.

With the optional audio app to play on your phone, you can learn about this city’s rich cultural history as you cruise past some of the area’s most famous landmarks.

The audio app is available in English, Spanish, Mandarin, Italian, French, Japanese, Korean, German and Taiwanese.

No Hotel Pickup.

No reservations needed.

Multiple departures daily.

Be sure to dress warmly for the outside decks. Depending on the forecast, consider hats, jackets, layers, and even gloves. San Francisco is known to have cool evening weather and being out on the water will only magnify things. But it’s more fun to be soaking up the views and the great atmosphere than it is to worry about being underdressed.

Upon purchase, you will receive an email voucher showing your purchase. The voucher will need to be presented on your phone at the Blue & Gold Fleet ticket window at Pier 41.

Tours are free for kids under age 5.
